IMG_8116It was one of those wake up and look out the window mornings. Pulling back the curtains of our immense hotel window, I stretched to a view of sunshine and mountains. No tall buildings in sight. No people rushing to work. No tasty smog. This was a pocket of calm that had to be relished.

IMG_6496It takes the right list of ingredients to claim a title like The Best Beach in the World. A few no-brainers would probably include: fine sand, warm water, gentle waves, and plenty of good sun. When picking the vacation spot for our last summer holiday from our teaching jobs in South Korea, seeing that Best Beach award edged out the Philippines island of Boracay from a few other competitors.

IMG_2286You know those dreams where you’re climbing up an infinite flight of stairs and everything around you looks the same? Yea, I’ve never had those either, but now I know the reference. We had found the path again after returning from our foray into the wild. And with the path were those cheery orange gates, reminding us with their relentless continuity that we had so far to go.

Jinhae1I checked my watch… looked out the window… turned on my camera… turned off my camera. Repeat. It was 1:12PM and we were minutes from Jinhae Station. Gotta catch the moment… can’t miss it, can’t miss it, I kept reminding myself. When or where this was going to happen, I didn’t have a clue. So far all my expectations had been lived through pictures and hearsay, and I remained determined to see this “stuff of fairy tales” with my own eyes.

Hallasan1The greenest, most peaceful park in South Korea is, ironically enough, located around a volcano. Named Hallasan, this beast of a mountain is massive enough to bring the entirety of Jeju Island (the last paradise in Korea) to its complete and utter destruction.
